Taking Back Your Backyard - Creative Ways to Make it Stand Out

A backyard can mean different things to different people. For the congenial host, a backyard means a great place to gather friends and family on warm summer nights. For the avid gardener, a backyard means a great place to grow prized zucchini and the biggest pumpkins in five city blocks. For the kids, a backyard means a great place to play games of soccer or catch miller moths. For the dog, a backyard means a great place to spend some time after a large meal. No matter what a backyard means to you, chances are you want it to mean something and, chances are, you want it to stand out. If you are nodding your head in agreement, and want your backyard to house a superior deck or a creative garden, then keep reading: this (rose) buds for you:

A Two-Leveled Backyard: In a world of flat backyards, the two level idea may cause you to open your mouth in shock: backyards, sans the ones right above plate tectonic boundaries, typically arent two levels. But, maybe they should be. Two levels give your backyard an appeal that one level does not and allows you to get more creative with your landscaping. Perhaps one level is filled with grass, an area where kids and dogs (or deer and antelope) play, and the other is filled with beautiful rock or rose bushes. Whatever it is you decide to put on each of your levels, two levels will undoubtedly give your backyard a whole new dimension.

Put up Night Lights: Its amazing how much night lights can enhance the essence of a backyard. Simply stringing your deck with party lights or putting gold Christmas lights on your trees is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to make your backyard sparkle. For effect, you may also put up tiki torches, making your deck look like something from a tropical island. If you are worried that your lights will attract too many insects, make sure one of the lights you put up is a bug light.thatll teach em to trespass.

A Butterfly Garden: Sure, most of us want to keep insects out of our backyards, but butterflies dont deserve exile: they dont bite, they dont spend their lives trying to get inside your house, and, plainly put, they are pretty. For those of you who love butterflies, or simply want to add some beauty to your backyard, consider planting a garden full of nectar-filled flowers, flowers such as Columbines, Begonias, Geraniums, Petunias, and Lilies. Butterflies will flock to these flowers and, if youre really lucky, you might find that your butterfly garden also attracts a hummingbird or two.

Add Some Water: For those of you who live in a landlocked area, bodies of water might not exactly be a hop, skip, and a jump away. Instead of longing for an ocean or a lake, bring a mini-version to you by putting in a fountain or a pond. A fountain or a pond can enhance your backyard, giving it a watery essence it wouldnt otherwise have. These might not be much like the ocean - they wont allow you to snorkel or surf - but, look on the bright side: you wont have to worry about sharks.

Add an Outside Bar: We have all been to a resort where the outside bar was a place we never wanted to leave: a hut made of grass where daiquiris and margaritas flowed like water, it was, simply put, paradise. You might not have a house on a resort, but that doesnt mean you cant put an outside bar in the corner of your deck. Itll take some money, and some work, but an outside bar will eventually give you a great place to host parties and kick back and relax: it might not be exactly like tropical living, but after a few Mai Tais, you may not know the difference.

Backyard Home Design - Outdoor Ponds Add Intrigue To A Landscape

One water feature growing in popularity is the backyard pond. It is not uncommon today the find a well cared for lawn and a small pond to add some landscape design intrigue. Not only are these ponds a great addition to the backyard visually, but also can sooth the senses and be filled year round with plant and animal life.

The biggest obstacle many new comers to water gardening or ponds face is keeping the pond clean and clear. If a pond in not designed correctly or taken care of properly in can quickly become a smelly, ugly eyesore people do not want to get near.

As in most things in life a garden pond needs balance creating an ecosystem as close to natural as possible. When done this way, the pond can be enjoyed much more as the pond cleans itself.

Excessive algae growth is one of the biggest causes of a pond failure. Without enough plants or animals to keep everything in natural balance, algae will begin to growth out of control. This murky, stagnant and usually bad smelling pond makes a great home and breeding ground for mosquitoes and other bugs creating a pond of frustration.

Controlling algae growth is a matter of using specific types of plants in your pond to help keep balance. Algae is a plant and needs sun to thrive, one way to help keep algae under control is to place water plants like water lilies in your pond which float on the surface. This helps block sunlight for the algae below in the water. Water lilies are the most popular of the surface floating plants that help block the sunlight from encouraging algae growth. Water lilies also have some very beautiful flowers as well, not floating leaves only!

Fish is another item to include in your pond. Fish love to nibble away on algae and helps keep its growing from getting out of control. Cleaning debris like dropped leaves and decaying matter from your pond is another way to control algae growth. Planting or placing plants in or around the edge of the pond can help keep debris from blowing in. Anyway to starve the algae stopping it from growing is the purpose.

Plants around the outside edge of the pond will help create a larger ecosystem. In turn this can attract a variety of wildlife like birds, squirrels, frogs and other wildlife will naturally help with pest control and help keep the pond clean and beautiful.

Home Insurance- Prepare For Flood Risk

According to a report released by the Met office; the organisation who supply environmental and weather related services, there may be further localised flooding to come. After the brief interlude of the last week in which we finally received a touch of summer weather it is forecast that we will now see heavy precipitation for the rest of the week to come and indeed the remainder of august. This presents a risk of further flooding for those living in and around already inundated flood plains.

An estimated 3 billion worth in claims were received by house insurance companies following the earlier flooding. They will be keen to avoid further claims due to renewed flooding. With this in mind one high street bank, namely; Halifax has released a guide to help those at risk of further flooding to help ensure as little damage as possible.

Firstly and perhaps a matter of common sense, they suggest you place sandbags around entrances to your property to help hold back any ensuing barrage should a flood be deemed imminent. You should follow this with removing your electrical devices to the second floor of your home, or perhaps loft if you live in a bungalow. Please do not try to carry the freezer up the stairs single handedly as this could result in a different kind of claim. Joking aside, any precaution you can take to prevent possessions being damaged should be taken. Once this has been carried out, or perhaps first on reflection, switch off the mains supply if you can to prevent shortage or possible electrocution due to water ingress.

The company also suggest keeping home insurance documents close at hand especially in times of high risk so as to be able to respond as quickly as possible to a claim.

If you are thinking of purchasing a property it would be advisable to run a check before committing to purchase to find out flood plain status. If you find the property is built on a flood plain; as are 2.2 million homes in the UK, you should not see this as a major cause for concern as the weather we have received this summer is deemed a once in a century event. It is worth taking note of and checking if it will affect the cost of your home insurance premium however as some insurers have predicted increases. It has been speculated that some insurers may cease cover in these areas. Again this is only theory and should not be a cause for alarm.

The best advice I can give for those of you who may live in these areas is to keep yourself updated via the Met office and look out for any flood warnings by checking local weather forecasts and listening to the radio where possible. Remember attack is the best form of defence in this case attack can be likened to preparation, with this is mind ensuring you are one step ahead and prepared for flooding you should greatly reduce your risks of damage to your possessions and home.

House insurance companies reportedly received over 3 billion worth of claims after the flooding of June/July.

Ensure your home insurance policy is up to date and close at hand in case of further flooding.
